Cologne Christmas Market

Cologne actually features seven Christmas markets.  Four big ones are located on the Alter Market, at the Cologne Cathedral, on the Rudolfplatz and on the Neumarkt. Each year, these four attract nearly two million visitors between them.

Most impressive is the one held at Cologne Cathedral because of the imposing Cathedral in the background.  The Market on the Alter Markt is in front of Old Town Hall’s narrow-gabled houses, presenting a quaint atmosphere.  There is quite a bit for children to do here as well.  For instance, there’s a puppet theatre, children’s roundabout, Santa’s grotto, and several toy stands.

The market on the Neumarkt is the oldest in Cologne, and it takes advantage of that fact with a distinctive nostalgic atmosphere, and a very olde-worlde feel that generates a real event that is well worth visiting.

Meanwhile, at the Christmas Market over on the Rudolfplatz, you’ll have an entire land of fairy tales and Christmas good cheer set against a genuine medieval backdrop.
